Extraction of coal by surface mining methods

Midlothian Council has refused an application for the extraction of 2Mt of coal because the site was not in an area of search for opencast coal extraction and because it would harm the character of the landscape and the local environment. In addition there was no overriding public benefit to be gained from the development.
